help gingerbread update gone wrong emergency!

Hey everyone

Originally I had 2.3.340 and I updated to the new gingerbread update. However now, my phone is running awfully slow and as soon as i press an icon (like text messaging or contacts) it just goes into a black screen with only the drop down bar on top...

What does this mean and what can I do? I really need to find out whats going on, I have a meeting tomorrow, and all the important files are on my phone!

Your files are on your phone or SD card? If they are on the SD card, which they probably are, wipe and reflash a new ROM. You wont lose anything on your card.

im trying to do a hard reset by pressing POWER + HOME, and i tap the SEARCH button, but its stuck at that...

Lets back up a little bit. Did you flash a ROM or did you do an OTA (over the air update)?

the symptoms is that:

after i installed the gingerbread update, whenever i try to enter something, the screen would turn black and the time at top just stops
