Back up of software and contacts - How do I do this?

Hello folks. I am going to be switching phones soon. How can I backup all of my apps and contacts? Is it as simple as dragging and dropping the app folders from my onboard drive space to my microSD?

It should be automatic, did you setup your phone with a gmail address?

Proud of my bloated D3, I don't miss unstable roms on my D1 at all!

Your gmail address should hold all of the information regarding contacts and programs (purchased and free) from the market. Google doesn't restore the data in the app, and I believe MyBackUp Pro is the only program that will back up data without root IIRC.
