What size is the image you're trying to use? The maximum size is 80 by 80 pixels or 39.1 KB (whichever is smaller).

Posting the image just helps answer a lot of questions.

You just upload avatar from the upload screen, not sure what your size and resolution are but the forum limitations are listed under the upload button
