Advanced Task Manager question

My droid seemingly opens up applications randomly. I can let my phone set untouched for a few minutes and then open advanced task manager and there's suddenly 14 running applications. Why? Can I make it so they don't open?

There are many threads on this. The best thing to do is to stop using the Task Killer and let the OS do its job.
