wireless tether and 3g hot spot?

I've been using wireless tether for a while but noticed u can hack the 3g hotspot. My? Is anyone faster or is it the same? Which one is preferred?

It is preferred to pay for the verizon service if you use it. Hacking the app from vzw can get you in trouble and talking about it can get you banned.
