By now I am sure you have seen or heard about Lewis from UnboxTherapy. He pretty much took over youtube and the internet for several weeks last year after releasing the "Iphone 6+ Bendgate Video". In this video he bends the Iphone with a bit of force. The video made the rounds on all the news networks and the video has had more than 65 million views on youtube. He is back with another Apple destruction video. This time he is testing the Apple Watch glass well before release.

In the video Lew shows off a couple of component pieces allegedly coming from the Apple Watch. They are made of what Apple is calling "IonX Glass". This is not the Sapphire glass that will be on the more expensive luxurious models, but is said to be a hard and durable glass. It is said to be about as hard as gorilla glass, and could possibly be a re branded version of Gorilla glass. Lew tests the glass with keys, knives, and varying grits of sandpaper. As you probably already know the glass stands up pretty well through the glass and knife, but is destroyed by the sandpaper. While not scientific this is a good test of what you can expect with real life use.

Thing is even regular glass will stand up to a knife unless it's a carbide blade. Keys are usually Brass, also softer than Steel and so they shouldn't scratch glass. Sandpaper uses crushed minerals such as Garnet or Aluminum Oxide which are very hard and abrasive. They can really scratch even Gorilla Glass. What usually scratches phone glass (and now watch glass) is the tiny particles of abrasive material that find is way into your fingerprint from dirt and acts like the grit in sandpaper to gouge microscopic caverns in the surface of the glass. To protect the watch face, aside from adding a screen protector, simply washing your hands or using a wipe like a baby wipe to clean your fingers will go a long way towards keeping your screens scratch-free.
