The free one from the market does require root access with superuser permissions. Are you rooted, your signature says that you are?

Yes to tether for free you have to be rooted to use apps in market place.

My Droid 1 was rooted. Im going to wait for 2.2 to see what it brings for rooted users. I need to change my sig.
