I just started leaving my gps on and I have not noticed any decrease in my battery life. Now I don't have any apps set to check my location continuously but I still leave it on. I figure its a pain to have to turn it on every time I want navigation, or places around me. I think as long you don't have apps set to check location on a daily basis then leaving gps on doesn't effect battery life.
