whats rooting?

sorry i am new to the forum, and will be getting a droid.
what is rooting? is it like jailbreaking for an iphone? will it effect my phone? thanks. its a motorola droid.

Before you get flamed, and yes this type of thread will do it, search around in the site there is a ton of info on it. Yes it's like jailbreaking with perks. You can run custom themes, roms and kernels. If it's a droid 1 then you have no limits. Look around all the information is here and use the search function to keep the flames away.
