What was the first 'awesome' device that you owned

i was born in 1980, but believe it or not, i remember playing on an intellivision. in fact, if i go into the attic right now, i can pull the machine out. i remember as a toddler watching my dad play and helping out with that little golden disk on the controller.

i also remember when the nes first came out, we drove to kmart to pick one up. i remember being amazed that the tax alone was ten dollars. haha. i also remember my sister and i not being able to play because my dad wanted to play it first. those were the times...

The first time I ever felt like I had something awesome before anybody else was the original Compaq iPaq. I had an HP Jornada 430se, I can't believe I still remember the model#, and there was a class action suit against HP for the misrepresentation of the number of colors it could display. As part of the settlement we had the option to return it for a full refund.

I was addicted to Brighthand.com, which at the time was the place to get handheld news. Somebody got a line on one company that had a limited quantity of the iPaq before it was available anywhere else. I remember it so well. I dreamed of that thing. The 206Mhz processor, the transflective screen, the auto-dimming backlight, all of which were firsts at the time.

I returned my Jornada and put the money towards the iPaq. I got my order in and became one of the first thousand people in the US to own one. It was like a dream come true. I loved that thing despite all its shortcomings. To think how much it lacked by today's standards. No media card slot without adding a bulky 'sled' (what everybody called the sleeve for the iPaq that added a CF slot). No built in wireless of any kind. Limited on-board memory. And all the problems... dust under the screen, lose stylus, all-around poor build quality. Still, it was the Cadillac of handhelds at the time and I had it before anybody else.

Thanks for starting this thread. I just got all nostalgic and realized that that was the last time I was as excited to get a new toy as I am today, the day when I finally get my Droid!

Sometime in the early to mid sixties I had one of the first membrane keyboard calculators. It had the 4 basic functions and that's all. No memory keys.

Nintendo Sixty Fooooooooooooooooooooooooooooour

I remember my Dad bringing home a Super Nintendo when I was about 6, that made my day. I just wanted to shout out Nintendo Sixty Four like the YouTube video.

A Compaq portable PC, or lug-able.

Had a 5" mono green screen and two, yes two 7" floppies. I think it weighed 35 pounds if I'm not mistaken. The first laptop sort of.

Parent's got me an NES when I was in first grade, I was the MAN, or so I thought lol. I can remember my mom playing mario with me still, good stuff. After that I got most of the current consoles which is always cool, but my favorite gadget for now is my Droid of course.

I don't remember the first, but the most awesome device I own now is a Roland VS2000cd. 20 digital track multitrack workstation. It's so complex I can work about 1% of it. My Droid is far and away the most awesome hand held device I've ever owned.

Edit - I guess my first was a colecovision game console. The cartridges looked just like cassette tapes. I've owned about everyone since then. Currently Xbox 360.

Its funny how you can tell how old someone is by the device they deemed awsome. I remember when the original gameboy came out. It was huge, square, and didn't have color but I thought it was the coolest thing around.

I used to have a 286 that had Norton Commander on it. It was a hand me down and out of date even then, but it rocked because it was MINE! I burned a lot of hours playing leisure suit larry 2 and police quest, ...using a land line to hit BBS's...*sigh*

First love and most awesome would have to be my Atari 2600 but I was blown away when I was able to actually "go on the world wide web" and play the Sega Dreamcast.

Well mines was the Nintendo NES...oh man mario bros was so awsome. Then onto Super Nintendo playing Mega Man was my favorite game. Now, its my DROID!!!:icon_ banana::icon_ banana::icon_ banana:
