what part is this black thing behind the screen

I cracked the screen in my DNA and bought a new front glass for it not realizing it didnt come as an assembly with the digitizer(which i wanted) but i tried doing it anyway and basically ended up having to completely shatter the entire area of the screen to get the old glass out, well like glued onto the back of the glass is like a semi-transparent layer which i at first thought must have been the LCD but when i looked at the other side of the phone i could see the lcd was still inside of the phone housing, now whatever that black layer is i beleive is what i need because now when i turn it on all it shows is a white screen, the lcd lights up and it vibrates when i push the home button and stuff but nothing else shows on the screen
