I have an OG Droid with CM7, and I haven't played with any of the other Motorola phones, so I haven't really seen too much of MotoBlur. So can someone tell me why people dislike it so much?
Largely, previous iterations were drastically slower than stock android. It got a bad rap that stuck. The latest blur really isn't bad and is much nicer than stock imho. But you'll always have purists than claim any skin is worse than aosp. It really comes down to personal preference in the end. Liking blur is nothing to be ashamed of
My first smartphone was an OG Droid and I loved it (I still do and would still be using it if the touchscreen hadn't started to go). I would agree hating blur is probably mostly about preference now. I personally don't like it, but that might be because of how much I loved and got used to my OG Droid (I didn't root or run custom ROMs on it though). Now that I'm on the D2G I put on HeXen which basically gets rid of Blur (among many other things) and now I absolutlely LOVE my phone.
I have a D1 and have always run custom ROMs, so my only experience with blur is on my girlfriend's D2. It's kind of laggy, and I don't really like the UI.
That being said, the newer versions of blur look pretty good. I've heard some people prefer it over AOSP and even... the almighty Sense. I know one thing, whether it has it or not is definitely not a deciding factor for me when considering a new phone purchase.
I'm pretty sure it does cover it, however Blur does stuff in the background like check your social networking sites for updates every x amount of time. So it basically continues to drain your battery for things you probably aren't using, or are using other, more efficient apps for.

well the messaging app/widget for blur links all messages like FB, text, and I think even e-mail (I don't know for sure because I didn't keep blur on my phone long enough to find out exactly what it all did lol) and it runs in the background eating battery and taking up memory. the social networking app/widget was just one example.
