What Happens during a factory reset

I'm on 5.8.894, running Kin3tx V1.0. I'm trying to get back to rooted/OTA. I've read hundreds of threads. Mostly confused more than informed. What happends, if given my current state, I do a factory restore. Where do I end up? Will I be rooted? If not can I root from there?
Thanks in advance for answers to what I hope aren't stupid questions.

A factory reset wipes /data and /cache to my knowledge. So you'll wind up with a KIN3TX with no user data on it. It'll remain rooted since /system is untouched. Your best bet is to fastboot the stock bionic images.
