What capabilities google voice give me?

Is it better to start it with a new phone # from google or existing cell #?
Are there pros and cons to each?

Well, one pro to having a separate number from Google is the ability to be either more or less selective with who gets it. Otherwise, I don't know.

Yep, I was serious . I watched a few videos on Google's product page and decided I don't really need it. If I do decide get it, it will be with a new number.

Yeah I have been apart of Google Voice since they first started and you needed an invite to join, and to be honest I still don't have a use for it. Other than freaking my wife out texting her naughty things from a strange number, but that only works once.

I use it as my main number and save $20/month by not having to pay for Verizon SMS.

Advantages to Google Voice (all free, by the way):
  • SMS texting from any connected device.
  • VVM (visual voicemail)
  • Multiple voicemail options (e.g. make one message for your wife, one for friends, one for numbers you don't know, etc.)
  • SMS spam filtering
  • Ability to make calls from your computer
  • Ability to make calls from your phone over WiFi/3G/4G (requires an additional app, like GrooVeIP)
  • Never worry about changing your number (Going to a different carrier? No problem; just change the device's number in Google Voice. Everyone can still call/text your GV number and it'll go to your phone as usual).
Disadvantages to Google Voice:
  • No mobile to mobile minutes
  • No "top five" numbers free
You can get over those top two by calling people in your top five/mobile to mobile via your device's number. Personally, I never use all of my plan's minutes so it's a non issue for me. Google Voice is potentially a very powerful tool, but you have to use it right. It's really nice, though, that it's baked so deeply into Android.

I think that statement hits the nail right on the head with Google Voice. I am sure most people (myself included), are not using it to its full potential thus the under utilization of it.

I love GV for all the reasons stated above. You can even change your GV # if you wish, choose a different area code, have seperate #'s for all your google accounts, etc. Get creative, you'll find lots of uses. As for shortcomings, the inability to text pics or attachments would be nice but hasn't been a deal breaker.

Google voice + groove IP = voip calling over wifi or the network = free calls

----posted maxx'ed out----

it's just a shame that we can't have a data plan without voice as well

I don't even know how to get a google voice number..so I usually just uninstall the app from my phone.
