Yep, I was serious . I watched a few videos on Google's product page and decided I don't really need it. If I do decide get it, it will be with a new number.
Yeah I have been apart of Google Voice since they first started and you needed an invite to join, and to be honest I still don't have a use for it. Other than freaking my wife out texting her naughty things from a strange number, but that only works once.
Advantages to Google Voice (all free, by the way):
SMS texting from any connected device.
VVM (visual voicemail)
Multiple voicemail options (e.g. make one message for your wife, one for friends, one for numbers you don't know, etc.)
SMS spam filtering
Ability to make calls from your computer
Ability to make calls from your phone over WiFi/3G/4G (requires an additional app, like GrooVeIP)
Never worry about changing your number (Going to a different carrier? No problem; just change the device's number in Google Voice. Everyone can still call/text your GV number and it'll go to your phone as usual).
Disadvantages to Google Voice:
No mobile to mobile minutes
No "top five" numbers free
You can get over those top two by calling people in your top five/mobile to mobile via your device's number. Personally, I never use all of my plan's minutes so it's a non issue for me. Google Voice is potentially a very powerful tool, but you have to use it right. It's really nice, though, that it's baked so deeply into Android.
I think that statement hits the nail right on the head with Google Voice. I am sure most people (myself included), are not using it to its full potential thus the under utilization of it.
I love GV for all the reasons stated above. You can even change your GV # if you wish, choose a different area code, have seperate #'s for all your google accounts, etc. Get creative, you'll find lots of uses. As for shortcomings, the inability to text pics or attachments would be nice but hasn't been a deal breaker.
