video encoding settings for eris

I'm using "any dvd converter" to convert big hd files to mp4 to play on the eris. It works, but I don't know what the best settings are to maximize resolution on the eris. It looks pretty crappy when it just uses the default settings.

I suppose I could do it through trial and error but that will be very time consuming. Anyone have any suggestions?

I use the original settings from the file, but set the codec to MP4.

I have a Droid, but it should be the same theory to the Eris.
