Using Numbers while Texting

When using the QWERTY keyboard while texting, is there any other way to use the numbers than pressing the ALT key for every digit.

It is becoming quite a hassle.

Correct, it is like a number lock. Just like hitting the up arrow once capitalizes the next letter only or hitting the up arrow twice puts it in caps lock.

fwiw, this works with shift too, so that you can type in all caps. if you double-shift and double-alt, you'll get symbols.
