"US" to the left of 3G??

What does the US to the left of the 3G mean? My phone won't let me text for some reason. It lets me put in a few letters then it just stops. For some reason it is letting me text if I close the keyboard and hold it in portrait mode. Any ideas???

No relief

If I turn my phone to landscape and open the keyboard the "US" pops up to the left of the 3g. The stupid phone will only let me type in a couple words and then freezes. Then it asks for a force close. This happens with handcent and with the stock texting app. Still works when I use the on screen keyboard in portrait mode but not in landscape. Weird. I sure wish someone could help
