Unlocked Droid in China

I will be moving to China soon for 10 months and want to bring along an unlocked US Smartphone to use there. Since I cannot use my Verizon iPhone in China, I am considering switching to a Verizon Droid that works globally and having them unlock it for me so I can put in a Chinese sim card once I am there. Does anyone have experience with this? What Droid model is best for this and what carrier in China works best in this situation? Any information will be extremely helpful!

Also, does anyone know if it is just better to purchase the Droid once in China through a Chinese carrier rather than get it through Verizon and unlock it?

It's better if the VZW world phones don't support the bands required in China.

"Best carrier" always boils down to coverage. China's a big place and general coverage discussions are always pointless. You'd need to confirm coverage where you need it most (as always).
