unlock question - 2.3 upgrade

I bought my Droid 2 Global a few months ago on eBay (cheap deal as a bad ESN). I've only ever used it with a non-US SIM card here in Europe and also in Canada on GSM. In view of the forthcoming Gingerbread update I have a couple of questions:

Is it likely my phone has been unlocked/flashed before I bought it? How can I tell? Do D2Gs work with foreign SIMs out of the box?

If the phone has been unlocked or flashed, will this affect a possible upgrade to Gingerbread? Will I be able to download the update? If I download it, will it (re-)lock or even brick my phone?

Obviously I don't want to upgrade to 2.1 if I risk bricking the phone.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Updates do not affect the SIM lock status.

The SIM unlock is permanent, it's not restored even by SBF'ing.

The SIM unlock is a Verizon-provided service, and as such, it does not in any way impair the ability to update the phone's firmware.

See the other topics in this forum regarding the requirements for the update to work fine.

Having a bad ESN/MEID won't probably impair the update process. And even if it does, there's manual install.
