Uh, how do I shut this thing up?

Went into a meeting a bit ago. Hit "silent mode" on my droid. About half way through the meeting a facebook email came to me and my droid chimed out "Drooid" quite loudly.

Soooo, how do I make this phone truly silent? As silent mode doesn't seem to do it.

You don't need any special programs. Silent mode should do it. Either your phone is messed up or one of the settings is wrong.

I have my phone on silent mode 100% of the time and it doesn't make noise for calls or notifications. I also keep the media volume all the way down unless i'm watching something.

if you go home - menu - settings - sounds and display, silent mode specifically says "all sounds except media and alarms are silenced."

while my text messages and email notifications are silenced, facebook is probably listed as "media". media will not be silenced.

check your sound settings, you might not have the "use incoming call volume for notifications" checked
While I have figured out how to get it to silent mode, I don't even see this option. Is that the exact name?
home - menu - settings - sound and display - ringer volume - use incoming call volume for notifications

but if the facebook app is considered "media" this setting won't matter.

Thanks 640k. Mine is checked.

My problem was app related. Trying to use Settings Profiles (like Locale but cheaper) to make it be quiet at work.

Setting the profile to activate "silent mode" didn't work, but setting both the ringer and notifications to "vibrate" did. So i'm good to go.

edit: the actual event that was causing the sound was a new Gmail from facebook, not a facebook notification.

in that case, sliding to silent at the lock screen should take care of this without 3rd party apps.

True, but I'm looking to do it automatically. I am terrible at remembering to switch my phone from vibrate to loud, so I end up missing calls at night (or having it go off in my quiet office) on a frequent basis.

I just want my smart phone to be smart enough to figure these things out on it's own hehe.

Have you tried FoxyRing? It can silence your phone by your location. Plus it is free.

I use Timeriffic to do exactly what you are trying to do...(it's free also). I have a setting to silence all rings/notifications during my work hours Mon-Fri (8:00am - 4:30pm) and enable vibrations for those and then to turn the ringers back up for phone/emails/txts after that. I had a problem of forgetting to change my phone settings and sometimes at work it'd go off loudly or sometimes at home it'd be on silent and I'd set it down and forget about it and I'd miss calls, messages, etc...

Timeriffic has been fantastic since I just need time based profiles anyway (Mon-Fri work hours, sleep hours, weekend sleep late hours and church service hours all have profiles).

Can adjust volume levels for ringer and notifications independently as well as turn on/off vibrations, turn on/off wi-fi/blue-tooth or enable/disable airplane mode depending on time settings.

The 3rd party app may be overriding the manual sound settings.
