i use handcent, but i don't believe that that's what's causing the problem. three times my phone's all of a sudden deleted every text i have. i see forums all the time, just wondering if there is a solution yet. and yes, i have thought about turning the auto delete off. i thought it was just when my sent message counter got to 1000, so i set it to reset every morning and i haven't got that high. and i thought that fixed it, but no. it did it again yesterday.

rc isn't really what i mean. i mean like vnc or ssh.
i used to control my jailbroken ipod touch on my windows laptop all the time. just had to open up the ssh gates and i was able to vnc right on in there, but i haven't tried it on my droid or since i've gotten my macbook pro. i saw a forum about doing it connected via usb, but i was trying to find a way connected via wifi or bluetooth.

#1, Are you running a task killer? They dont play nice with MMS programs. Almost every "My texts got deleted..." thread on the board is by people using task killers. Ive had it happen myself. I dont use it anymore, I found it was bogging my system down, because I was killing apps the system EXPECTED to be running in the background, and it was screwing things up. If your phone slows down, do the old fashioned thing and reboot it.
Cant help you with #2.

For VNC access, I personally use AndrodVNC (might be labelled as android vnc viewer). Seems to work well for me.
