transferring photos via micro sd adapter

I was told that I could remove my Droid microchip, insert it into a micro SD adapter and transfer photos to my compaq computer. When I insert the card into my drive, the drive does not recognize it is there. Not like my usual Nikon camera memory card for which I have software installed. I was told that Nikon program would also identify the photos on this microcard. Was I instructed wrong?
Do I need a USB cable to connect my Droid to the computer and transfer photos that way? Or is there a way to use the product purchased?
Thanks.

Most folks transfer their photos by mounting the phone to their computer via the USB then drag the photos to the PC.

I would think that the micro card reader would work just fine. Once inserted it should appear as a separate drive. Perhaps the SD card was not properly seated in the reader. I would try again.
