So hi all. I just rooted my droid 2 yesterday after reading a lot here so thank you. Being so new I started reading about what to do after rooting and tbh I got a little confused lol. Ive seen so many things about kernels and roms and the like I was curious as to what to get. Mainly I want to be able to customize my phone and get a little more speed and better battery life. Not sure if I need kernels for this or just roms or what. Any help or suggestions would be great. Running 2.3.20. Feel free to add me on msn as well. Thank you guys in advance.

Unfortunatley you cannot change the kernal on your D2 due to the locked bootloader. As for custom ROMS do your research there are a bunch out there and they differ depending on what you like. I myself have been very pleased with liberty 2.0.1 but apex 1.4.1 was my first rom and it served me well as a beginner due to the mix of motorblur within it. Apex is also where I fell in favor of ADW launcher. So do you homework and follow directions and don't be afraid to ask more questions.

unfortunately kernels aren't an option on our phones because moto locked/encrypted the bootloader, so the only way to change the kernel is when moto upgrades it with the ROM... I was running the gingerbread leak since it was released, then switched to ZombieStomped (gingerbread based), and now I'm on the gingerbread based ApeX beta... all 3 seemed just as stable as can be, and much snappier than all the froyo based stuff imo.
basically I say just make sure you're comfortable with the SBF process and then go and try anything that looks interesting to you :)

Edit: it appears it took me longer to post that than i thought, lol... i believe the term is "ninja'd"?

Dude you have quite few options. Not for Kernals but in ROM's and customization. I found best performance, stability, and battery life out of the GB leaks.

Well that right there is a huge help cuz the kernels were really confusing. As for roms I think I will look around. There being so many I guess trail and error will be it. Just a few more questions if you don't mind. Is overclocking a rom cuz I've heard alot about it. Also can I have more than one rom or is it like a whole phone thing?

Overclocking is not a ROM it is actually telling your 1GHz CPU to run at a higher speed than it is built for. For instance my D2 is running at 1.25 rather than 1 flat.

ROM's for phones are like Windows for PC's. Does that makes sense?

Outside of that you can check my signature for a bit of info regarding Rooting, ROM installations, and backups.....just follow it all step by step...

This was actually a huge help so thank you a lot. Just one last question and ill start figuring things out for good lol. For themes, does a ROM include a theme and if so can I change it? Also which would be best for a beginner whose tech talk is.....minimal?

Yes, usually. For example, if your into customizing liberty 2.0.1 is the way to go. Its probably the most customizable rom around and very user friendly. Check out the liberty toolbox app in the market to get a taste of what you can do (i would also recommend watching video on youtube and reading these forums of course!)

Just a warning though dude, you'll probably get hooked. I know I became an android addict once I rooted and saw what i could do with my d2

Picture themes like skins....they just change the appearance. The ROM is the operating system.....as for beginners ROM's......I really don't know. I have changed ROM's a lot of my D2 but I settled on the Gingerbread leak because it is very fast, stable, and good on battery for me.

So I tried the liberty gingerbread ROM for my DX and it seemed to crack and then ended up getting stuck on the liberty screen. I think it was due to runing DXBootstrap while in Gingerbread.....I was told that might have been the issue. I want to try the Gingerbread Liberty ROM again but don't really feel like doing another SBF. Anyone with a DX get the Liberty Gingerbread going? If so, what version, and what do you think - also any kewl themes?

Thats cool. GB is faster than liberty 2.0.1? I'm gonna have to try it

IMHO the GB leaks are too much of a hassle. I'm gonna wait till the OTA comes out and is rooted with ROMs. I've never had to SBF and don't really want to especially if its just because I don't like a GB rom and want to go back to 2.2. Patience is a virtue. I'll reignite the flashing flame in due time.
