Thunderbolt Display & Battery??

I found that the biggest battery drainer on the Android is the display brightness, but when I turn the display down, I can barely see and it saves battery. I want to be able to see the phone, but is there any other settings that would cut back on display? Maybe turning animations off or something?

EDIT:: I just thought of another idea. Are there any kind of screen protectors that help you see a darker screen?
