Text notification.

Does anyone know how to make a text notification be only the envelope icon at the top with an audio alert and nothing else? Even when you set up a pin and lock your phone you still get a text pop up for everyone to see! I mean, what's the use of locking your phone and then everyone be able to read your texts? If you turn notifications off then not even you will know you have a text unless you check. This is a BIG flaw in this OS... Does anyone know how to obtain the combination of notifications that I'm looking for?

Not sure about the native messaging application, I use Handcent.
In Handcent you can go to Settings, Notification Settings, then uncheck the 'Enable Popups' box.
