Text messages now making sound even while open

Hey all, I changed my text message sound today, and now my droid is making the text sound *every* time I receive a message, even when I have the conversation thread open. In the past, it would only chirp at me if the message wasn't open, but once I opened it (for example if I was having a multi-text conversation), it wouldn't beep at me every time the other person replied.

I can't figure out how to fix this. I tried switching back to my old text sound, but it's now doing it with that sound as well.

Any ideas? It's very annoying to have my phone chirping every few seconds when I'm texting.
