Tethering

I received a laptop for Christmas and am wondering about tethering this to my Droid 1. I see in my settings, under networks that they is a tethering area that says that I can do this. I have read in the past that this was basically against the rules.
If I do tether, is there an app that you would suggest for tethering?
Can you please explain how I would go about tethering my phone and computer as I am learning as I go.
Any help would be appreciated.
On the same topic, does Verizon charge for occasional tethering?

For easy tether discription it says it will work for the nintendo wii, has anyone gotten this to work? 15 mins isn't a lot of time to see if it works!

Thank you for the tip.
On that note, with the "tethering " in the networks / wireless in the settings section on my Droid, do I need to use an app to perfom this function?
