Android tethering

If I use my android phone, which has WPA2 encryption, as a mobile hotspot, using an unsecured Wi-Fi network, can I tether a device and have a secured connection on the tethered device? I created a flow chart below to explain:

Unsecured wifi ---> wpa2 encrypted phone (as mobile hotspot) ---> tethered device = secure tethered device?

Nope, the traffic will move across the unsecured network and be open to sniffers and man in the middle attacks. Securing the phone's WiFi will only prevent the attacks as it moves across your hotspot.
