Switching phone question

I may buy the original droid off of ebay, but I currently own a d2g which I just got last month. Now I love the d2g but I wish it had an unlocked bootloader so I could use cool roms and stuff. My question is, how easy is it to change phones from a d2g to a d1?

All you have to do is activate it. You can google the activation code. Not sure how to deal with insurance though.
