Switch from 4G to 3G

A friend of mine mentioned to "turn off 4G if you don't need it" - and obviously I won't ALWAYS need the 4G, so if I can extend the battery by going to 3G that would be great - I just have no clue if it's possible, or if it is - how to do it.
