Stuck deciding- please help

I have been seriously considering buying a smartphone for some time now. However, I have realized that due to my location (25mi south of Chicago), I will not be covered by Verizon's 4g by any current or future LTE sites. I would have no problem shelling out the cash for 4g, but I am uneasy about 3G. I have read that an average DL speed is around 1-2 mbps, which is the same as my wifi which I find painstakingly slow. However, the extra features on smartphones are awesome, and I'd be able to sell my iPod since most smartphones coming out have plenty of space.

Can anyone offer advice? Of course most of you switched from a 'dumb' phone to a smartphone at some point, and any personal experiences would really help.

Thanks for your time

Know this, one you go smartphone, you'll never go back. :)

3G works fine for me. I mean if you're just going to check email and Google stuff, 3G is great. Then again my Internet isn't the fastest ever.(Satellite. In other words my 3G is much faster than my wifi.)

You have to ask yourself what exactly you need bandwidth for? Do you plan to try to stream Netflix or something like that? Or is it more for low-bandwidth stuff like email, IM, and so forth?

I would be using the internet for apps (facebook, weather, email, games, etc.) as well as web browsing. I do have netflix, and it would be great to have it on my phone, but it certainly is not a necessity. The other benefits of a smartphone for me would be a music player and a pretty nice camera.

My current phone has internet, but it is very limited (25mb per month) and very slow, not to mention the phone is awful.

The verizon website says that my house is covered, but upon looking at the map, my house is literally a 5 minute walk away from the edge of 4g coverage. This makes me doubt that I will have any sort of consistent 4g.

Have you looked at anyone other than Verizon? I've heard good things about T-Mobile around Chicago, actually. (I'm up in McHenry/Lake County.) I'm likely going with T-Mo as my service provider.
