Standard tv 3d glasses?

Awhile back I had found a set of 3d glasses that work for 3d enabled games on xbox or ps3 obviously after turning those settings on. There is something about the glasses that they say that they can make any 2d tv 3d I guess idk anything about how this works but I wondered if they were the same kinda glasses that you get at the movie theater or if they are different?
