SMS notification but no text

hi i have the Droid2 and occassionally (like once a week) will get the alert sound for a new text message, the green light flashes, and sometimes if i catch it fast enough can see the last few words of the text scroll across the top bar preview. however when i go to messages, there is nothing new there! i know i am missing messages! HELP! and how do i fix this!?
