Does anyone know if u can change the sms alerts to an mp3 instead of using the pre loaded ones?

Yes, use Ringdroid or Rings Extended similar to make MP3s and set them as Notification ringtones

Yea, Ringdroid works well, been using it for ringtones and notification tones.
