Simple Question but complicated answer

Ok im running stock 2.1 and have been reading thru the root section and would love to root my phone but got confused, i have been lookin around and seeing videos as it being as easy as just adding the update.zip to ur sd card and rebooting and installing..but i want to make sure that i dont download the wrong one and when i came here they wanted me to do something with sprecovery n complicated..all im asking is can someone point me in the direction of a dl link to the most current 1st thing i should download to root my phone...this will be my first time rooting and am very excited, and other quick question should i delete my cache n data if i have never rooted before?? thank u

further research it looks like i have to revert back to 2.0.1 just to root. so i guess i will try that

ok im doing it now..so is it ok to unplug when its 26percent done and does it automatically put nandroid backup on my phone?

I don't think it's ever good to unplug anything without it being 100% done....
