Silent Ringtones

On the original Droid, I had a setting for a "Silent" ringtone. I used this for e-mail notification, so that it didn't wake me up during the night as e-mails arrived. This setting is missing from the Droid X, is there a workaround? I don't want to use the silent mode, as I need to receive calls. All suggestions are welcomed

audio manager seems to do this. you can turn down your notifications while keeping up the ringer volume

or just go into the app>settings>notifications and the first option for a ringtone should be silent
