Silent Mode

1) The droid has a silent mode that you access with a long press of the power key, and a speaker off mode that you get by dragging the speaker icon to the left on the main screen. Are those just two different ways to get to the same place?

I don't think....the silent mode is to turn your ringer off....and the speaker off option is to turn the media sounds off? Not 100% sure on that
