Settings Saving

I downloaded a couple notification sounds to use for txt and such and when I first did it they worked.. Now they arnt in the notification section to even select but they are in the ringtone section.. So I dont know how to switch them over so I can use them.. Also when I had one set I restarted my phone and it took it off as the setting and changed it back to the default.. Anyone else having this problem or anyone know a solution.. Im new to android so I dont know how to work it..
