Setting up & troubleshooting email accounts

From this page on Motorola's site, here's some steps to take if you're having trouble getting your email to work:

There are a few things you can try if you are not receiving email, but your email account is set-up correctly:
For every account that is having this issue
1. Check Incoming server settings
  • Open applications tray, select My Accounts
  • Current account will be listed; tap on account having issue.
  • Tap on Incoming server
  • If Use secure connection is checked, uncheck it. however, if Use secure connection is unchecked when issue occurs, check it on.
  • Save settings with OK button and and close application.
  • re-open Email application from applications tray, Press Menu hard key and then tap on Refresh.
  • Email should start appearing if corrected.
  • If email account set-up does not appear to be occuring, verify your email POP3/IMAP port, server and security requirements for incoming mail. You can check our FAQ here for a settings chart for several common email providers for additional help on setting up your email account through manual set-up.
2. Retry with Wi-Fi OFF, if already off, retry with Wi-Fi ON. Some email providers and carriers have restrictions on connection through WiFi.
3. Authentication error on incoming or outgoing accounts: Check your account password settings within Incoming server settings for problems with incoming mail, within Outgoing server settings if you can't send email. Also retry receiving on Wi-Fi vs only 3G to see if there are any restrictions on the WiFi service you are using.
4. You could also be using several devices with the same email account and those email settings might be causing new email to be on one device at a time.
  • Check you email settings to make sure you are leaving a copy of the email message on the server. This will ensure that emails go to all your devices accessing the account. ***Emails will not be deleted (including wastebasket) until they are removed from the server (generally thru computer access).
  • If you have setup Outlook or Outlook Express to receive your personal email, follow instuction below:
  1. Open Outlook
  2. Go to Tools > E-mail Accounts
  3. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts, select Next
  4. Select Change
  5. Select More Settings
  6. Select Advanced
  7. Check "Leave a copy of messages on the server"
  8. Select OK
  9. Select Next from the E-mail Accounts screen
  10. Select Finish
To correct this issue in Outlook Express:
  1. Open Outlook Express
  2. Go to Tools > Accounts
  3. Double Click on the email account
  4. Select Advanced
  5. Check "Leave a copy of messages on the server"
  6. Select OK
  7. Select Close
This will allow you to access the same email on both your PC and your cellphone. Previous email went to either one or the other device, depending on pull schedule.
5. Application Error: this could be due to service issues, delays with Motorola Application Software aggregation. Retry with Wi-Fi OFF, if already off, retry with Wi-Fi ON. Some email providers and carriers have restrictions on connection through WiFi.
7. "PUSH" not working for corporate email. If your corporate account has already been set-up and working, but you stopped receiving email and/or email alerts, it is possible that you will need to power cycle your handset to get things working properly again. You should also make sure that your settings are correct for email notification.

Additionally Motorola has specific help for:

Maybe you can help with this problem. I have a gmail account and a non gmail account. I use Windows Mail (Vista OS) on my home computer and the mail comes into my computer in the correct order but on the Droid Razr, the emails are not in the proper order. I know I have new email but when I open on the phone I have to scroll for the new message. This happens only on the non gmail account. I cannot find a setting for this.
Any info you can share is appreciated.

How can I delete email accounts from the stock email app on my Droid Razr (ICS)?
I have given up on the stock Android mail client. It did not work under Gingerbread and still does not work under ICS. Even the gmail accounts did not work, which is interesting. I now use K9, which seems to be working (I have two gmail accounts, a yahoo mail account, a hotmail account and two pop mail accounts)
I just want to stop the stock mail client from trying to download messages and there are 3 mail accounts that I cannot remove (gmail, yahoo and Cox pop mail).
I get a message saying "invalid credentials" when I try to remove the accounts (which never worked in the first place because I was already getting the invalid credential message when trying to set them up).
Why would I need credentials to remove an account from the phone is beyond me.
But I don't need to understand why Google is unable to make a mail client work with their own mail system, I just want to delete the accounts.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Didier

PS: I also use an iPhone 4S that my company gave me for an overseas trip, and all email accounts worked the first time on that phone, and they work over the air or over WiFi just the same, in all locations in the 3 countries where I just travelled. I consider the state of email on Android to be a disgrace with an otherwise remarkable operating system.

Does anyone know how to change the folders that are displayed when you tap the top line on you email account? In pic 1 you see how it appears normally but some how I got the Trash folder to display in 2 of the accounts but not the 3rd. as in pic 2.

Screenshot1.webpScreenshot2.webp

This is just a shot in the dark, but for the email account that does not show a trash folder, try deleting an email and see if it automatically creates one for you.

Tried That

I tried that and did it multiple times to no avail. Also tried making it the default account. Went all the way to Motorola 2nd tier support and they couldn't tell me how. Originally had only 2 accounts, first had the trash in the second screen and the 2nd account did no. After I got off the phone with Moto it all of a sudden appeared in the second account, so I thought I would add a 3rd, but have yet to get the folder to appear. And the Trash folder is all ready there if you go to "show all folders."

iT SURE WOULD BE NICE TO SEE SCREEN SHOTS.

What version do they apply to?

Sorry, I don't use Outlook so screen shots will have to come from others.

The first set of instructions are from Motorola's site and cover general setup. But if you're not finding what you need there, scroll down to the end and How can I set up an email account? That link will take you to various other methods of setting up.

Also, as I followed some of those links along, I found setting up Microsoft Exchange email (with pictures) which also might be helpful. I'll add that to the links in the original post.

Your INSTRUCTIONS DONT SEEM TO APPLY TO OUTLOOK 10.
What version do they apply to?

I have outlook 2010 and would be happy to try and help but I am a bit confused. Outlook 2010 on my computer is an e-mail program that sends and receives e-mail from my Internet service provider(ISP). A quick look in play store shows an app named "outlook web mobile" which allows you to use Microsoft exchange as your ISP and works with outlook 2010 on your PC. Is this the app you speak of when you say outlook 10? If I may ask a few questions, I, or others may be able to better help.

1. Who is your Internet service provider?
2. What is your E-mail program on your PC?
3. What is your e-mail app on your phone?
4. What exactly is not working for you?

With this information I think there is a great chance that the great people here on this forum will be able to help. SallyC is one of the best at troubleshooting E-mail problems by far!

In reading this thread I wonder if a solution has ever been found for the ongoing Road Runner outgoing email issue when home WiFi is not available ?

Deleting the account and re-entering it seems to very temporarily solve this problem. Outgoing mail works fine on home WiFi only.

I don't know if this will help or not, but here's some updated support info from this Motorola help page (note the separate link if you're running ICS):

  14. Uncheck Use Secure server
  15. Uncheck Verify certificate
  16. Tap OK
  17. Select Outgoing server
  18. Enter SMTP server - smtp-server.si.rr.com - (*** si refers to Staten Island only; Search list at bottom of FAQ for theroadrunner server name for your location)

Wow Sally, you're the bomb!

Aww, thanks. I hope it helps. I can't imagine having my email not working properly!

We had some workmen here yesterday and one of them forgot a form he needed me to sign. So he wondered if I had a FAX the office could send the form to. I do have one (because it's part of a multipurpose printer) but I'd never used it. I said "Can he just email me a pdf and I'll print it out?" This guy is much younger than I am, but he had no clue what I was talking about! I totally understand his feelings though because technology is evolving so quickly and totally changing the way we do everything! It wasn't very many years ago I had a dedicated FAX line in my house, now I'm not even sure how to set a printer that does the work of 5 machines, to even receive one!
