sending mail from outside the home

I have been curious about this question for a long time but never tried it,if I a person sends an email from starbuck or any other area who has WIFI can it be traced back to a sender, how does that work.sending mail from outside the home.
There are times when I want to be anonymous when sending an email.
THANKS

Everything has your IP number associated with it. There is an exception to that rule though, forget how it works, never worried about it.

If you send an email it will have "your return address stamped on it" no matter what. If you do feel a need to send an anonymous email "anonemail" will take your email stamp it with a different IP number, send it from a random server (blocking your true location) an send it at a random time (within 12 hours) for true anonymity.

i kinda understand but if i am on starbucks network and send it from my xoom will it still have my ip address on it,thats what i mean.
THANKS

Wouldn't you be more worried about your "e"address? Or are you creating an "e" address to "deceive"? Yes the initial IP address would be of pizza hut (curious how fast is their wifi?) But yours is still linked to it if you know how to dig.

Gmail hides your IP if you send it through Google, I'm sure it can be done, anonemail, is one. But you can't hide it from the government. I'm trying to shoot a text over to my IT friend. He should know both sides of the coin.

Create an anonymous email while you are using the other IP. Send the email from there and never log into that anonymous email from your own IP. This will keep you anonymous from everyone but a court order at the very least. This should be completely sufficient to hide the "anonymous sender" from anybody, unless they make terrorist threats or similar serious crimes, in which case the appropriate agency might be able to track down the "mac address" used to create the email.
I'm not about to ask why or what, that's none of my business...

If I was up to no good I would by a tablet 500 miles from here, go 500 miles in a different derection, set it up at McDonalds send my email, remove battery then go home 500 miles away.

You forgot to mention that you'd wear a disguise and only use cash for the tablet purchase... :)

Ash, yes, I didn't want anybody to know how evil I could be. Yes, cash and disguised both places. Secret service would only have security cameras to figure out my identify, also I would incinerate said device. I would bet anything nowadays has GPS chip in it.

Of course I would use anonemail to throw of the email time stamp, secret service would have a 12 hour time window to review security video. One more layer of anonymity.

Your identity is never protected. As long as you have an IP address, it can be traced back to your MAC address and sometimes your physical location.

If the anonymous service is willing not to disclose your IP address, then the traceability will end with them. However, they themselves can trace the next step if they wish or are intimidated enough.

IP addresses are only good when they can be traced to something. So if your IP address is not wifi, then typically it can be traced to an address. If your accessing over Wifi, then they will use that IP address to give them the MAC address of your hardware. From that MAC address they will know exactly the hardware you used just like a serial number.

If your hardware lets you change your MAC address, then you can get some measure of anonymity.

you guys gave me good info and i understand it alot better.

As I received this post I was sitting next to my friend that works for the government, he assures me that depending on the severity of the message the government could or will bust down your front door within 6 hours. Even with the scenario he laid out for me.
