screen light has a mind of its own

Why is it that when Im on the phone using headphones, that the screens light will just come on and I have to hit the side button to turn it off?
In a 20-30min phone call on headset.. Back light turns on abt 3 times?

When I get a phone call..mine never comes on..impossible to see who's calling or even answer the phone or turn on speaker
