If you had to guess, which company do you think holds the most mobile patents? If you guess Apple, Google or anyone else other than Samsung you would be wrong. According to an exhaustive study performed by mobile analyst Chetan Sharma, Samsung gained the most mobile patents of any company last year, and now holds the world crown for holding the most mobile patents overall. Here's a quote with a few of the details,

Samsung, also currently the world’s biggest mobile company, received the most mobile patents in 2012, and it now holds the most mobile patents of any company worldwide, according to the latest patent report out from mobile analyst Chetan Sharma, which lays out a thicket of companies scrambling to put a legal seal on their intellectual property in the fast-moving world of wireless communications.

For his study, Sharma looked at more than 7 million mobile patents awarded in the U.S. and Europe, the two biggest markets for patents globally at the moment.

This means that Samsung has been gearing up to either defend themselves from Apple attacks or wage their own war on everyone. Let's cross our fingers it is the former and not the latter.

As an interesting aside, the U.S. accounts for 72% of all mobile patents between Europe and the US.

Thanks for the tip, grenefroggie!
