Safe to wipe SD card?

I try to keep my file systems clean and free of clutter, be it phone or pc.. since getting my Droid and having some fun downloading and trying things out for the first couple weeks, I'd like to wipe everything and start from scratch with only what I want to keep.

I know it's probably not necessary, but is it safe to connect to a pc, delete everything from the SD card, wipe all data on the phone and do a factory reset or does the SD carry important files needed for the phone to be reset? (Seems kind of silly if it does)

I've done it a few times... Format SD card and factory reset. The market place keeps your paid apps and if you opt for google to keep your backup, it will restore all your settings ie; wifi etc..
