S3 will no longer play nicely with computers via USB, not recognized at all.

I've tried multiple cables and multiple computers, all of which have recognized my phone and facilitated file transfers in the past. At some point, not exactly sure when, the phone just stopped popping up on any computer I plug it into. It charges just fine, both when plugged into the wall or a computer's USB port, but never shows up as a drive and the phone never gives any indication of USB connection options like it used to.

As I said, I've tried multiple computers and cables, tried uninstalling and reinstalling and updating drivers, and I've also tried installing KIES, which I have no interest in using, but was just hoping it might work... No go on anything.

Factory reset is my next attack method, but I'm waiting for all my stuff to back up via wi-fi first. Is there anything else I'm missing that I can try first? It'd be nice not to hassle with a factory reset if it could be avoided.

If there is a really good reason to connect it rather than doing WiFi transfers it sounds like the only way to find out if the problem is hardware would be to do that factory reset. I can't see an app as being an issue in this case.

I would assume your phone is stock.

This works for me every time my Samsung Galaxy S3 fails to recognize my computer/media device. Turn off your phone. Remove the case and then remove the back of the phone. Remove the battery and then reinsert the battery. Then put the cover of the phone back on. FIRST, plug your USB cable into your phone and then your computer. THEN, power on/restart your phone. Your computer should then recognize the connection between your computer and your media device! Then you can put your protective case back on your phone.
