Running apps

I have been using an application killer to close applications that I am no longer using. However, I see a ton of Apps that are listed to be closed that I have never opened. Why are these Alps listed that I don't use?

They either do automatic syncs (which can be turned off in settings for most apps), or are coded badly. I look for apps that are functional AND don't kill my phone's battery/memory.

Ie: I opted for the ESPN news that doesn't do anything until I click on it (then it shows all the headlines), as opposed to the widget that scans the headlines on your workspace all the time. It uses less battery and memory.
