[Rumor] Huge Order of Samsung Flexible OLED Displays Suggests Imminent Product Launch

Supposedly, Samsung Electronics Chairman Kwon Oh-Hyun recently indicated that “huge orders” of Samsung's new flexible OLED display technology have been recently made by OEMS. He also shared that mass production [of devices that use the screen-tech] will be ready in Q3 2012. Previously, we had been hearing rumors that flexible OLED displays would become available in late 2012, but this is the first word from "someone in the know" about it. There were no details given as to what the large orders will be for. It could simply be new HD TVs, but it could just as easily be for new smartphone screens.

Chairman Kwon Oh-Hyun believes that OLEDs will start replacing regular LCD screen tech in popularity as early as 2015. Those are some big words, but perhaps these "huge orders" could be a sign that he was right. We will have to keep an eye on this to see.

Well this seems like this will solve the screen shattering potential (along with the potential to "wow" going outside the box). Then if they can make the rest of the phone a bit more durable we can say goodbye to cases (personally, the Otterbox Defender makes me forget that my HTC Rezound is actually pretty small and thin).

I think the screens will still be used on a flat device with at most a curve like the GNex has. That or maybe the entire device will be able to flex a little for times when the phone may get bent in a purse or pocket. Just know that the cost will be crazy high at first.

Convex phone screens might make a big difference in glare. Lots of possibilities with the technology.

Yes... one of the biggest advantages that people sometimes forget is that they use less energy than other screen tech, so the potential side benefit would be longer battery life on smartphones.

I'm wondering how far outside of the box the manufacturers will go with this tech available. So many different ways to utilize this.... its like a sugar rush just from thinking about it lol.
