Rooting my droid (Give me the run down)

OK new to the droid world. Hear about rooting everywhere. What is it? What does it do/not do? Pros/cons? I know it voids my warranty so should i wait til the warranty is up?

here is another post i found that explains alot of things and gives another way of rooting droid phones. its good knowledge to have if you decide to root.

these links will give you all the info you need to answer your question. i found them in the hacking section. this quetion has been asked a thousand times so they put it up as a sticky. i used the rooting metheod in the above post and it was worth it. even if the only thing you do it for to get the wifi tethering.
