root or not to root?

What are the advantages to rooting a droid x? I found some files and instructions to root the droid x so some of my apps will work. What does rooting actually do and is it harmful to the phone n anyway?

Root is like gaining admin privileges on your phone. Please use search next time there are a million topics explaining this and its advantages.

Basically it allows you to install non-market apps and allows you to do more..
