I know, my last updated to this ROM was back in April. Its been a LONG time (at least for me) since then, and I have been promising an update. Here it is in verison 4.8. Its not HUGE, but it gets you up to the latest official base, safely, and with the Steel Droid touch. There is more that will go into this, but to be honest, the Droid 3 is not my number one device right now. Its actually the Galaxy Nexus, and the new AOSP JellyBean source. Dont worry, I want to update my Droid 3 build with some new theming, and try to smooth it out a little more. I have not gotten a SINGLE issue reported to me from any of my testers for the v4.8 release! Now THATS rock solid! Thats STEEL DROID!

Flashing instructions:
OK, this is where everybody is going to get confused. This does NOT work the same as the OG Droid did. So, follow my directions exactly, and you should have no problems getting what you need to work! These instructions will take you from bone stock, to my custom ROM, with the LEAST amount of errors.

NOTE 1: If you are on version v4.x, and have not gone hog-wild with messing with the system, then feel free to flash v5.0 directly on top of v4.x.
NOTE 2: When flashing a ROM, please make SURE your battery is OVER 75%. Lower battery levels have been reported to cause bad flashes.
NOTE 3: If you are already on the OTA 5.6.890, be sure to do a full wipe before flashing v4.x or 5.0
NOTE 4: If you are on another ROM, be sure to do a full wipe before flashing v4.x or 5.0

FLASH 5.6.890 SBF (for a TOTALLY clean install for those with paranoia)
1: Download the 5.6.890 SBF file HERE
2: Download RSDLite 5.5 HERE
3: Extract the contents of the SBF file to a folder on your computer
4: Install RSDLite
5: Boot the Droid 3 into bootloader by holding both Vol+ & Vol- at the same time when powering the phone on
6: Select "AP Fastboot" and press Vol+ to select it
7: Select the XML from the extracted SBF file in RSDLite
8: Connect the phone, and when it says "Connected", hit "Start"
9: Wait for the phone to finish flashing, and booting (it will reboot a couple times, leave it alone, its supposed to!)

ROOT STOCK ROM
10: Install and run Petes Motorola Root Tools. Download it HERE
11: Follow the instructions in the app to root your phone

INSTALL SAFESTRAP RECOVERY
12: Once rooted, install Hashcodes v3.05 SafeStrap Recovery from HERE
13: Reboot your phone, and when prompted, hit MENU to enter SafeStrap Recovery.

BACKUP AND INSTALL NEW ROM
14: MAKE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE DOING ANYTHING! (just a precaution)
15: Go to "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from internal sdcard", then select my ROM's zip file
16: After it installs, back out and reboot the phone
17: YOU HAVE DONE IT! CONGRATS ON YOU NEW STEEL DROID INSTALL!

I would suggest using the v3.05 release of Hashcodes Safestrap Recovery. It is now based on TWRP 2.x. MUCH easier to use

Give the ROM time to boot. The first boot took me almost 5 minutes! If your phone doesn't boot in 15 minutes, pull the battery and try again. If it still doesn't boot, you need to go back and start over with my instructions at the beginning!

ALSO: Please be sure to check out the free tethering hack! I use it regularly, and it DOES work. Quite well I might add. Details HERE

Well, I have a packaged ROM ready to go, problem is, that its in update.zip format. But thats not too bad I guess, since the fix for flashing ROMs from the recently released D3 bootstraped recovery is within a week away! Its not built from source, but currently based on 5.5.959. Not going to be a massive amount of changes, but at least its a custom ROM, right?! dancedroid

I just got 5.6.890 deodexed, but don't have a decent way to test it. I could test groups of apps individually, or in small groups. Needed smali/baksmali 1.2.8. I WAS using 1.2.3

Nope, not possible yet. Or at least too hard right now. Will wait till CWM is fully operational to do my major changes...

i would be glad to test also :p

+1 here too. I have a steel droid rom loaded on my D1 and have my D3 running a few changed properties on 5.6.890 (quicker transitions, different wifi scan time, different battery status icon displaying percentages)
