I have a screen protector covering that sensor and has no effect towards it. Noticed when talking on the phone the red sensor stays on and when covered it shuts off the screen so its obviously for when the phone is being held up to your face it will sense it and shut off the screen. It just doesnt make much sense why yours stays on all the time.
